What is ThoughtStream?
ThoughtStream is a program that allows you to store information and organize it the way your mind works -- by associations or links between ideas.

ThoughtStream is currently available for Palm ® connected organizers. It has been tested primarily on the PalmPilot TM and Palm III TM models. It should also work on the new Palm IIIx TM and Palm V TM models. I don't think it will work on the older Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 models.

Development of a desktop version is still in progress. It will run on MS Windows and Un*x using wxPython. Snapshots are available now.

ThoughtStream is Open Source Software under the GNU GPL.

News
Inactivity 7 April 2006
A coworker just pointed out that this is a perfect example of a typical sourceforge project: The only activity in years is a post saying that I expect to work on the project again soon. It should now be apparent that that didn't happen. Since this site still gets a noticable amount of traffic, I thought I should put up a note saying that this project is abandoned.
The drought comes to an end 29 May 2001
After a long hiatus, I intend to resume active development of ThoughtStream. See the mailing list archives for more information on what I'm doing now.
ThoughtStream-PalmOS 0.4.4 released 20 December 2000
This release contains a long accumulation of bug fixes (and documentation updates courtesy of Larry Turner), but no new functionality. If you're using 0.4.3, it'd be a good idea to upgrade. With this release I am discontinuing the separate thoughtstream-palmos-source archive. If you want the source, you can get it from CVS.
Mailing list changes 30 August 2000
Due to egroups.com's recent change in advertising policy, the ThoughtStream mailing lists have been moved to sourceforge.net. See this page for more information on the new lists. Archives of the old list are available here.
I'm back 25 June 2000
I'm back in the states. See the mailing list for some musings on the future of TS.
Vacation 17 May 2000
I will be in France, and therefore mostly out-of-touch with ThoughtStream, until June 24. I will not be reading my regular email, so if you have any questions or problems regarding ThoughtStream, ask on the mailing list and maybe someone else will be able to help you.
New desktop release 7 Apr 2000
ThoughtStream 0.1.0 is now available. Changes include a lot of internal reorganization and a new file format. Files saved in the old format will be converted automatically. However, support for the old file format will be dropped in future releases, so you should convert (i.e. open and save) all your existing documents with this version. (Make a backup first, in case the conversion process goes awry)
New desktop snapshot 1 Feb 2000
A new snapshot of the desktop version is now available. The interface has been reworked, and it should now work on Windows.
New PalmOS release 13 Jan 2000
ThoughtStream 0.4.2 for PalmOS is now available. This release is basically an accumulation of small fixes. The desktop component has not been changed; 20000108 is still the latest version.
CVS now available 11 Jan 2000
I've put ThoughtStream in CVS, for those of you who want to track the latest changes. This is meant for developers who are interested in working on the project; most users should stick with the released versions. Instructions are at SourceForge. The module names are 'thoughtstream' for the desktop version and 'thoughtstream-palmos' for the Palm version. Anyone can use the anonymous access; write to me if you want full access.
New release 8 Jan 2000
I've made a lot of updates to the conduit. This version is much safer to use than the previous one. The sync logic can handle every case I've thrown at it without data loss (although there was some unnecessary duplication in some cases). You can now delete ideas on the desktop (by checking the box next to the title and pressing the trash button on the toolbar), and they will be deleted on the handheld on the next sync (if an idea is deleted on the desktop and modified on the handheld, then the handheld version will be copied to the desktop). When you delete an idea, all links to that idea should also be deleted. Both the desktop and Palm versions have been updated (to version 20000108 and 0.4.1 respectively); if you want to use the synchronization, you'll need the new versions of both.
New release 22 Dec 1999
Desktop/Palm synchronization is finally here! It still makes some mistakes, and things you thought you deleted have a habit of reappearing, but it's a good start. To try it out, you need the latest versions of Pyrite (0.9.3) and Sulfur (0.1.3), both available from http://pyrite.linuxbox.com, in addition to the usual requirements.

<disclaimer> If you play around with this stuff at this point, you will lose data from time to time. Don't come crying to me when it happens (unless you've got a good bug report (and ideally a patch ;-))</disclaimer>

Create a mind on either platform, then use the File/Spawn command on the desktop to establish a relationship between a local file and a Palm database, and use the Palm/Synchronize command to actually do the copying.

If you have any comments about this release, please use the mailing list rather than the SourceForge message forums.

New address 30 Nov 1999
This page has moved to http://thoughtstream.org. Aside from being easier to remember, this site will also allow CGI. In addition to hosting the site, SourceForge is also providing other features which you can see on the Project Page.
New PalmOS release - 0.3.0 1 Sep 1999
This release makes some changes to the data structures necessary for the upcoming desktop synchronization. It is not compatible with data from earlier versions unless you get the converter here. Install the converter and TS 0.3.0 at the same time (without deleting your old version), and run the converter exactly once before running TS. You can delete the converter afterwards.
New PalmOS release - 0.2.1 18 Aug 1999
This release adds partial field support, the ability to set and go to your home idea, and compatibility with LinkMaster 0.3.0.
New PalmOS release 8 Aug 1999
This release adds history capability when used in conjunction with the new 0.2.0 release of LinkMaster.
New PalmOS snapshot 4 Aug 1999
Lots of new features in this release; almost all the features from before the rewrite are back, along with some new ones. See the mailing list for details.
New PalmOS snapshot 11 July 1999
A new snapshot of the PalmOS version is available from the download page. This version is a major rewrite, so much functionality is not present, but you can see parts of the new interface. See the mailing list announcement for more details.
New snapshot 20 June 1999
In this new desktop snapshot, you can create several minds and link between them. More details are available in the mailing list archives.
New snapshot 15 June 1999
A new desktop snapshot is available. In this version, you can open multiple minds at once and open multiple windows.
New snapshots 13 June 1999
New snapshots for both desktop and handheld are available. No new features, just the new name.
