I had forgotten about drag and drop. That will definitely be added, and
I like the idea of a trash can drop target. If space gets tight, I
could replace the bottom button bar with a panel of drop targets when
the pen goes down on an icon. Is there anything other than the trash
can that would be useful as a drop target for an item?

I assume you mean left-most icons here. I'm planning to add "swipe"
operations to the main text - drag right for details, left for the
occasional special operation (e.g. siblings on links), but up-down
dragging will still allow bailing out.
