Subject: [TS] Shoes and ships and sealing wax

Well, it's been a really busy semester, but it's almost over and I'll
have time to devote to ThoughtStream again shortly.
Program status:
I can now copy minds between the desktop and handheld versions in either
direction. The actual sync logic is still to be done.
I would like to allow notes in a more sophisticated format than plain
text. Two canditates for this format are HTML and StructuredText.
StructuredText is a format used in Zope, designed to allow rudimentary
markup while remaining intelligible in plain-text form
(http://www.zope.org/Members/millejoh/structuredText). Since there is
not a graphical html editing widget for wxWindows (yet), editing of
formatted notes would have to be done by hand, which is a point in favor
of StructuredText. Also, StructuredText has the advantage of looking
sensible on PalmOS (well, it may be possible to work something out with
Plucker for viewing HTML, but editing remains a problem).
Another issue: should this markup be applied to all notes, or only those
stored in specially-marked boxes?
Website:
Thanks to sourceforge.net, I've moved the website to
http://thoughtstream.org Aside from being easier to remember, I will be
able to use CGI on the new site, for the web-based version of
ThoughtStream that is coming at some point in the future. Sourceforge
also offers some other potentially useful services:
Bug tracking - If you want to report a bug and make sure it doesn't
languish at the bottom of my mailbox, try submitting it here.
Mailing lists - I don't think I'm going to take advantage of this. It
would get rid of the ads attached to messages, but we would lose the
web-based interface that I know quite a few of you use.
CVS - This is potentially a big deal. Is there anyone who would use a
CVS repository if it was available? (For those of you who don't know
what CVS is, it's a way for me to store a work-in-progress copy of the
source in a publicly-accessible place, and make it easier for selected
others to modify the source) This could be very useful as ThoughtStream
grows, but I won't bother setting it up until someone else is ready to
use it.
